"Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor" -Proverbs 29:23
Pride always sets us up for a fall. Pride tells us "I'm strong, I don't need anyone's help". It blinds us to our weaknesses and leads us away from seeking people and help we desperately need. As I've been reading this text as well as the story of Jacob and Esau, it was made clear to me that we really just need to get over ourselves.
We all ask for provision in our lives whether it be relationships, a job, or possessions, etc., but before that there will come a point in your life where you will have to separate yourself from your stuff. What I have accomplished, what I have achieved, will not produce real peace. Your gift will not give you lasting peace. It is the peace we are really after, not the provisions.
We hide behind this prideful version of ourselves, hiding behind the people, our personality, our religion. But this keeps us from seeing and knowing our true self, as well as God. When Jacob finally got to Esau, he was amazed at what he saw. Jacob had been running for 21 years to avoid the one thing that he feared the most, Esau, and was met with love from him. Sometimes the thing that you are hiding from or so worried about was already taken care of by God. He provides everything, all you have to handle is what's your heart.
